Dinner and a show: Poole’s and Avenue Q

We definitely saved the best for last!  Before our last show of the season (Broadway Series South), we had dinner at the new and improved Poole’s Downtown Diner.  Then we saw the much anticipated Avenue Q.

Poole’s was, as promised by VarmintBites, delish!  Poole’s is really a French diner.  It has aspects of a French cafe – the menu is on giant chalkboards, so you have to walk around some to decide what you want (promoting conversation between patrons), and the servers are around but won’t generally come over to you unless you give them some indication that you want them to stop by.  It still looks like a diner though, with the long bar and booths.  The food is French diner too – it’s like the chef thought about French food and then made it comforting to the American palette.  The result?  YUM!  If you go, you must order the mac and cheese.  As Greg Cox wrote, it is to die for.  The not-so-secret recipe is available here, which explains why it’s so amazing.  I had the half chicken with some kind of incredible sauce (sorry, not a foodie!).  My dh had the duck.  Bonus – they have some cool beer!  It’s not cheap, but, for the quality, it’s definitely a good value.  I cannot wait to go back.  Check out a couple snaps of the menus here.

I’ve been trying to see Avenue Q for a long time.  I’ve tried a couple of times to get tickets while in New York (yeah, the lottery doesn’t always work out so well) and have been impatiently waiting for it to show up in Raleigh.  It finally did, and it did not disappoint.  The show had us laughing so hard that we were wiping tears from our eyes.  Be warned – it is SO not pc, and, although there are puppets (aka “monsters”), it is not a children’s show.  For example, a couple of the songs are “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” and “The Internet Is for P0rn.”  We loved it and would highly recommend it.
