Grand Canyon flooding

On Wednesday, more than 300,000 gallons of water per second were released from Lake Powell into the Colorado River.  The building of the dam in 1963 caused significant changes to the river, including leading to the extinction of 4 fish species and near extinction of 2 others.  Officials have come to the conclusion that man-made floods every year or two should help to rebuild beaches and support the wildlife.  More info from NPR’s article is available here.
