Destination Friday: Iceland

Today I’m particularly interested in Iceland.  According to an annual UN report published last month, Iceland is the world’s best place to live (based on life expectancy, education levels, and real per capita income).  With its dedication to using renewable energy, the country seems so different from the US – and an amazing place to visit.

A glacier tour is an obvious must on any tourist’s list of things to do in Iceland.  The only question – by super-jeep or snowmobile?  Of course, by boat is another option.

I’d love to see the Northern Lights.  This would require visiting in the colder and darker months (September-March), but it would probably be worth it.

A visit to the Blue Lagoon is also a must in my book!  It’s a geothermal spa heated by a nearby geothermal power plant.  “Superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run turbines that generate electricity.  After going through the turbines, the steam and hot water passes through a heat exchanger to provide heat for a municipal hot water heating system.  Then the water is fed into the lagoon for recreational and medicinal users to bathe in.” –wiki

If I played golf, I’d want to go during June and play in the middle of the night.  The course at Akureyri Golf Club is open 24 hours a day that month due to the midnight sun.

Hiking is another must!  And maybe horseback riding, river rafting, or skiing.  Iceland is tops for those who enjoy being active.

Fun summer activities include bird and whale watching.  The most popular whale watching tour company is so sure you’ll see whales that they’ll take you on another tour free of charge if you don’t.

The Icelandic people are artists and really appreciate their beautiful surroundings.  Fortunately, several photographers (Bergmann, Rosenstock, Hreinsson) offer photography tours to assist visitors in capturing what the country has to offer.  That sounds like so much fun to me!

I’m not sure when I’ll make it to Iceland, but I look forward to getting there someday.
