Travel envy
Ben just posted on the Sydney Morning Herald’s travel blog about travel envy. Hilarious stuff – go check it out. My favorite bit:
And then there’s Facebook where, if you really want to, you can follow the everyday minutiae of a person’s travelling life, even before they’ve left, thanks to the never-ending flow of status updates: “Dave is going on a trip to Cuba! Woo! … Dave can’t decide what to pack for his trip to Cuba … Dave is thinking this Cuba trip is going to be awesome! … Dave thinks he’s going to need plenty of sunscreen for those Cuban beaches … Dave is going to be drinking daiquiris in three days! … Dave’s pumped – two days to go! … Dave’s in Cuba!”
And so on. It’s enough to make you un-friend a bloke.
Ha! Do you get travel envy? Oh, and just in case you were wondering, I just booked a Baltic cruise yesterday.

TTT: Renting a vacation home
I’m really looking forward to our upcoming trip to Mexico with one of my BFFs and her husband. We’re renting a gorgeous house in Tulum, Villa Gordon (pictured below). This is a great way to save some cash on your next vacation and my travel tip this Tuesday.

TTT: How to transport your DSLR
If you have a DSLR, this Travel Tip Tuesday post is for you. I am the proud owner of two DSLR bags that we actually used. I “need” two because they serve different purposes. We first tried the traditional shoulder bag, like this one. But those are ugly and uncomfortable. For our last trip to Europe, I decided we should get a camera backpack.

News: Heathrow expansion
On Thursday, the UK gave permission to build a third runway at Heathrow. Why is this such big news? Lots of people are protesting this expansion. According to one blogger for Tripso, “The development of the runway, additional terminal and extra roads at Heathrow will lead to ‘the destruction of more than 700 homes, a 500-year-old pub and a school.’”

News: US Air plane lands in Hudson River
Yesterday’s splash landing in the Hudson River by pilot C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger of the American Airlines US Airways (*snort* I was thinking about AA and actually managed to type that – sorry!) plane going from LaGuardia to Charlotte proves me right – these pilots are totally trustworthy. Cool Runnings – Cary, NC
We are the only ones here tonight. What the heck??? People! Get yourselves over here! I can’t make this jerk sauce and these patties myself, so you need to help me keep this place open.
TTT: Travel insurance to protect against layoffs
A couple of friends of mine booked a cruise for later this year, but they’re afraid they might get laid off in the meantime (they work in the banking industry). I know a bunch of other people who are also nervous about booking their vacations this year for fear of layoffs. It’s a risk either way – if you book and get laid off, you could be looking at footing the bill for a vacation you don’t really want to take anymore in favor of being able to pay your mortgage and other bills for a few extra months; if you don’t book and don’t get laid off, you’ve lost the opportunity for a wonderful set of memories that would last for the rest of your life. What should you do? Get yourself over to one of those travel insurance companies that offers protection against layoffs! That’s my advice this Travel Tip Tuesday.

Triangle: The Wine Authorities
A few weeks ago I caught a show on NPR interviewing the owners of The Wine Authorities, a wine store in Durham.

BFF’s vow renewal
So this isn’t exactly travel related, but I’m sharing anyway! I’ll try to tell you some useful Atlanta stuff soon, but for now I’m just AWing for my BFF, Ami. She and her husband of 10 years celebrated by throwing a huge amazing set of parties in Atlanta around New Year’s. We were there and loved it. Why am I telling you this? Because you should go see her posts about it and check out her photographer’s pics.
